Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a armed takeover in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.

This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.

His child, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the magistrate's decision was the possibility of Bolsonaro's move to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of organizing to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.

The court filing emphasizes that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is located around 13km from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader President Trump, leading him to enact a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for medical care, saying he needed regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which involved plans to murder the current president and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, many his backers invaded and destroyed official structures in the national capital, Brasília.

The police intervened and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by him whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the moment, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
